Q & A
We've tried to come up with possible questions you may have regarding the Qaniq Challenge, and provided answers here...
Enjoy! And we'll see you on the trails!
Q: WHAT IF THERE IS NO SNOW – CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK?
Nope – there is always snow in Valdez in January. It might not be on the race course but it will be in sight.
Q: IF CONDITIONS ALLOW, CAN I RUN THE COURSE RATHER THAN SKI?
Come on – really? It’s a ski race. There may be times where you will have to portage your skis if the river crossings aren’t frozen over – but you have to ski whenever conditions allow.
Q: WHAT IF I WANT TO SKI ONLY ONE STYLE OR COURSE?
You are welcome to ski only one course or even one style – your time just won’t be counted and you will become ineligible for winning any prize money. But heck… you can still enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world!
Q: WHAT IF SOMEONE CHEATS?
Tell them not to. If that doesn’t work, we will have officials along the course to do the dirty work for you. Just be good people and we’ll all enjoy the experience more.
Q: WHAT IF MY SKIS BREAK WHILE OUT ON THE COURSE?
Fix them. I would recommend duct tape! Otherwise you can ski on one, have someone deliver you a new set or scratch…. But don’t do that!
Q: HOW DO I AVOID BEARS?
Don’t wake them up. Most should be sleeping by race day, but if not, a bear chase is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping… and may shave some seconds off your race time.
Q: WHAT IF MY FLIGHT INTO VALDEZ GETS CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER?
Thanks for the donation? Cancelled flights are not uncommon in the winter months. Please plan ahead, watch the weather and have a contingency plan. Even when flights are cancelled, the drive from Anchorage to Valdez is typically fine as long as you drive carefully. The bonus to driving is that you’ll experience some of the most amazing scenery on the planet!
Q: WHAT IF I DON’T OWN SKIS OR FORGET MY SKIS AT HOME?
This is Alaska. You can fashion a quick pair out of the native spruce trees… or you could go to the Prince William Sound College and borrow a set of skis through the Health & Fitness Center’s “Ski-for-Free” program. Just call them at (907) 834-1684.
Q: IS THERE A PLACE TO WAX MY SKIS?
Sure thing. Upon request, We will have some heated spaces set-up for waxing. Just let us know as soon as possible.
Q: I WISH THERE WERE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO RECEIVE A CASH PRIZE.
We do too – but that’s not a question. The way to fix this is to spread the word about this race, as much as possible. The more people, the more sponsors. The more sponsors, the more money! The more money we take in – the more money we can give out.
Q: I’VE NEVER PARTICIPATED IN A RACE THIS LONG. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TRAIN?
Hard! Just keep in mind, this is what is hoped to be a long-standing tradition. Just finishing this race will be worth the bragging rights! Ten years from now, you’ll be the cool guy or gal wearing the “retro” Qaniq shirt from "Back in the day."
Q: WHO EXACTLY IS ORGANIZING THIS RACE AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY?
The City of Valdez, Alaska – specifically the Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is organizing this race. All money not spent to pay timers, contract bus services, print t-shirts and pay for the banquet – will go back into next year’s race with the intention of expanding the event for future years. The City Council graciously allowed us to move $10,000 from our 2014 operating budget to establish the initial prize money. The rest is up to you! Our goal is to promote the natural beauty of Valdez and increase the public’s exposure to Alaska – we are not running the race to make a profit – we promise!
Q: ANY OTHER ADVICE?
Yes – Have fun, enjoy the moment and live life to its fullest. You only get one chance at it – so try not to screw it up… too much! Wait, you probably meant about the race… get skiing!!!
In all seriousness, if you have a question not answered here, please feel free to shoot us an email. See you all around town!
