The Valdez Qaniq (Pronounced, "con-ick" - Alutiiq for “falling snow”) Challenge is scheduled to take place in Valdez, Alaska during each Martin Luther King 3-day weekend.  This 2-day/35km cross country ski race will combine both classic and freestyle skiing on two separate courses.  There is a combined purse of $10,000 divided among the top male & female finishers along with local and Old Timers' award recognition.

registration will run from the 1st of November through RACE DAY 1 and will be on a “first come-first reserved” basis for up to 200 skiers.  The registration fee includes: race bib, dri-fit shirt, awards banquet dinner ticket, and the experience of a lifetime!

If/when registration reaches 100+ skiers, a lottery-style drawing will commence on the Friday morning preceding race day 1.  This drawing will conclude which trails each skier will be starting on.  Skiers will simply swap trails on day 2 and the total overall time will establish our winners.

What to Expect:

This race will take place – regardless of ski conditions, cancelled flights or other Valdez Winter challenges – hence the name!  Be prepared to ski in all conditions as the possibility of white-outs, open water crossings and/or blinding sun may happen.  As a result, no refunds or registration “swaps” will be allowed – please plan accordingly… remember, getting here is half the fun!

Awards Banquet:

The evening of the final race day, there will be a private awards banquet dinner.  You'll be able to look forward to tasty eats, celebrations, and plenty of libations!  At the banquet, we will announce the 1st - 10th place winners, award medals, have AMAZING door prize drawings, and take time to enjoy a relaxed and fun-filled evening in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

We look forward to seeing you all at the 3rd annual, 2017 - QANIQ CHALLENGE!

Additional Info:

Getting here is half the fun!

You can drive, fly or float to Valdez.

Anchorage, AK serves as the major airline hub, with a commuter airline, Ravn Alaska, flying into Valdez on a daily basis. The Alaska Marine Highway provides ferry service to Valdez from Whittier and Cordova. Valdez is located at the southern end of the Richardson Highway, which connects to Fairbanks from the north, or Anchorage via the Glenn Highway.

Don't wanna race it? Watch it!

We encourage everyone to come watch and cheer on the skiers!! (They're gonna need all the support and cheers they can get on this course!) Here are a couple spots to view the race and support the racers:

The race on the Mineral Creek Trails, starts at 11AM. Racers will start and finish at the W. Hanagita trailhead next to the USCG Community Center. Other good places to cheer and view are the Bette Cato Bridge and W. Pioneer Drive.

The race on the Glacier Stream Trails, starts at 11AM. Racers will start and finish at the Old Trap Range (1.5 Mile on the Richardson Hwy.) Due to the remote trail access of this race, the only viewing spot will be along the trail/Richardson Hwy between the Trap Range and Alpetco Road.  Patron parking will be available at the Gold Fields Complex.

**Please do NOT walk on or along the Ski Trail!!**
